The Meaning of Schizophrenia
Research and Experimentation reveals Schizoid paranoia might “be on to something”
R.D. Laing shook up the psychiatric establishment in the 1960’s when he showed that the person who gets labelled “schizophrenic” is usually the “identified patient” in a larger network of family and societal relations which are themselves dysfunctional, and whose members share responsibility for the outcome. Stan Grof’s research with LSD and alternative non-drug methods demonstrated that chronic “schizophrenics” can often be healed if the spontaneous eruption of unconscious content into awareness is enabled rather than suppressed. Of course, a great deal of this research has been labeled “unscientific” by the Psychiatric establishment, and even Laing himself has been mislabeled part of the anti-psyciatric movement. He was, simply, the first to point out that the DSM and it’s misnomer diagnosis of “schizoid” condition may actually be killing the messenger:
“If the human race survives, future men will, I suspect, look back on our enlightened epoch as a veritable Age of Darkness… They will see that what was considered ’schizophrenic’ was one of the forms in which, often through quite ordinary people, the light began to break into our all-too-closed minds.” ~ R.D.Laing
Bush’s Proposed Plan
The problem with the proposed plan of mass-issueing neuroleptic drugs to an enforced, coerced, pre-screened population of the USA is not only that our core human rights will be violated but also the “network” of actual dysfunction (our corrections system, our broken homes, our medical establishment, our way-of-life) will not even be approched by this
organized suppression of real issues of public health. Under the old reductionistic paradigm, lives are ruined, marriages break down, familes suffer, and governments, health insurance companies, and taxpayers pick up the tab for the untold tens of millions who ingest
the mind-numbing drugs every day of their lives.
It seems to methat the American (and even Global) healthcare establishment, as well as the governments of like-minded conservative countries (US, UK, and even the EU) is fighting a guerilla war against our rights as human beings. It is fighting itself, and the societies it serves by attacking an illusory symptom so that a minority of voices can prosper, those that can afford insured healthcare, those that can afford to be outside of an enforcable majority of the growing number of uninsured in the US (alone).
I post this long discussion, because I believe, even here, this is an issue worth taking notice of.
The Mad Among Us are The Soothsayers of Old; Listen to the Schizophrenic, you had better listen. We are all in the asylum, and the most insane amongst us have closed the door.
But it isn’t locked yet…
